New Delhi: Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, a sitting Supreme Court judge, has been appointed as the new executive chairperson of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, made the appointment, which took effect on November 11, 2024, under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
This announcement was made through a notification by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, published in the Official Gazette. Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the current Chief Justice of India, was the previous executive chairperson of NALSA.
As per established convention, the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court typically holds the position. Before his appointment to NALSA, Justice Gavai chaired the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC).
In his new role, Justice Gavai will lead NALSA in its efforts to ensure that free and accessible legal aid reaches all citizens, particularly those from disadvantaged and economically weaker backgrounds across India. His leadership will play a crucial role in advancing NALSA's mission to uphold the constitutional right to justice, ensuring that financial and social barriers do not deny any citizen access to legal representation.
Justice Gavai is also expected to succeed Justice Khanna as the Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025, with his tenure concluding upon his retirement on November 23, 2025.
