NEW DELHI: Today, November 8, is the last working day of Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice D Y Chandrachud will take oath as the 50th CJI on November 9.

 Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit will be superannuating today, which is a court holiday due to Guru Nanak Jayanti. The proceedings of the ceremonial bench presided over by CJI Lalit will be broadcast live by the Supreme Court. Justices Bela M. Trivedi and DY Chandrachud will also be on the bench. Justice Lalit served as the CJI for 74 days.

On November 9, Justice Chandrachud will become 50th Chief Justice of India. On November 10, 2024, he will retire after a reign of more than two years.

President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice D.Y. Chandrachud as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI).

After Justice Lalit, Justice Chandrachud is currently the senior Supreme Court justice. He was appointed to the court on May 13, 2016. Justice Chandrachud held the position of Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from October 31, 2013, until his elevation to the Supreme Court. He also served from March 2000 to October 2013 as a judge at the Bombay High Court.

Justice Chandrachud earned a BA in Economics with Honors from St. Stephen's College in New Delhi and an LLB from Delhi University's Campus Law Center. He received his LLM and Doctor of Jurisprudential Sciences (SJD) degrees from Harvard Law School in the United States.

At the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court, he was an attorney. The Bombay High Court named him the senior attorney in June 1998. In 1998, he was selected to serve as India's Additional Solicitor General.

In March 2000, he was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court, and three years later, he was named Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. In May 2016, he was appointed to serve as a Supreme Court justice.
