Kolkata: Calcutta High Court Judge Kaushik Chanda has reserved his verdict on a petition seeking his separation from the hearing. West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has filed the petition. The case relates to challenging the result of nandigram assembly elections in the high court.

A single bench of Justice Chanda, hearing on Thursday (June 24, 2021), said that when lawyers fighting on Behalf of Mamata Banerjee can be believed even after shd had a political background, why not this acceptance for the judge? It may be recalled that Banerjee had expressed the "possibility of favouritism" citing Justice Chanda's association with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Justice Chanda said the two lawyers involved in the case have a political connection. "You are from the Congress and other lawyer SN Mukherjee has been associated with the BJP, and he told Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Mamata Banerjee. But both of you are fighting the case. If lawyers with political backgrounds can be believed, why not the judge?"

Mamata Banerjee had filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court alleging irregularities in the Nandigram election results. Mamata Banerjee had written a letter to Acting Chief Justice of Calcutta HC Rajesh Bindal urging him to hand over his petition to a bench other than Justice Kaushik Chanda. The reason was that Mamata Banerjee was calling Justice Chanda a member of the BJP.
