The Supreme Court regainbed its full complement of 34 members on Monday, as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Gujarat High Court judge Justice Jamshed B Pardiwala were sworn in as apex court judges.

During a function at the newly-built auditorium of the top court's extra building complex, Chief Justice of India (CJI) N V Ramana administered the oath of office to justices Dhulia and Pardiwala.

The appointment of Justice Dhulia and Justice Pardiwala restored the top court's full strength of 34 judges, which had been reduced to 32 after Justice R Subhash Reddy's retirement on January 4 this year.  According to people familiar with the procedure for appointing members of the higher judiciary, Justice Pardiwala will serve as the CJI for more than two years.

Justice Dhulia, who would be the second judge from Uttarakhand to be elevated, is the younger brother of Tigmanshu Dhulia, a national award-winning film director and actor. He will be in office for just over three years.

Following the recommendation of the two high court judges by the supreme court collegium led by the Chief Justice, the Union Law Ministry processed the paperwork quickly on Saturday, resulting in the issue of the warrant of appointment the same day from President Ram Nath Kovind's office. With the appointment of two more justices, the CJI has now sworn in 11 top court judges, making it the first time in history.

After Justice S Abdul Nazeer, Justice Pardiwala would be the fourth Parsi judge to sit on the Supreme Court bench, and the first high court judge from a minority community to be elevated in the last five years.

In February 2017, Justice Nazeer was appointed to the Supreme Court.
