The tragic Kallakurichi hooch incident has escalated with the death toll rising to 47, and at least 30 individuals reported to be in critical condition, according to Tamil Nadu government officials on Friday. Kallakurichi District Collector, Prasanth M S, reported that the bodies of 29 victims have been handed over to their families for final rites.

A total of 165 people were admitted to various government hospitals after consuming spurious liquor. Of these, 47 individuals have succumbed to their conditions. The health status of 30 out of the 118 currently receiving treatment is critical, the Collector stated.

"Amidst the grim news, there is a glimmer of hope as three affected individuals have shown signs of recovery," added the Collector. Following a visit to the patients, he announced the formation of special teams aimed at curbing the sale of illicit arrack in the district through intensive operations.

Efforts are being made to ensure an adequate supply of medicines for those affected, and door-to-door enumeration is being conducted in Karunapuram to identify potentially impacted individuals. The public is being urged to seek medical examinations if they have consumed illicit liquor to prevent further fatalities.

The situation remains under close observation, with authorities working diligently to mitigate the impact of this tragedy and prevent similar incidents in the future.

During yesterday's Assembly session, proceedings concluded with legislators paying homage to those who lost their lives due to consuming spurious liquor in Kallakurichi. The session also saw tributes to 17 former legislators and DMK MLA Pugazhenthi, who recently passed away. Additionally, the Assembly honored the victims of the Kuwait blaze, including seven from Tamil Nadu. Speaker Appavu read the obituary note, followed by a moment of silence observed by the members in respect.

The Assembly session, which commenced yesterday, is scheduled to continue until June 29.

Today, three accused in the Kallakurichi illicit liquor case were remanded to 15 days of judicial custody and transferred to Cuddalore Central Prison. The accused—Govindaraj, Damadoran, and Vijaya--were produced before the district combined court earlier by Kallakurichi police.

District court judge Sriram ordered the accused to remain in judicial custody until July 5, facilitating their transfer to Cuddalore Central Prison for further legal proceedings.
