Former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union president Kanhaiya Kumar is expected to join Congress on September 28.  Rumours were rife in the media that Kanhaiya Kumar may be joining Congress after his meeting with Rahul Gandhi in the past. According to reports, the offer to join the party has been pending since the last Lok Sabha polls.

Jignesh Mevani, who is a Dalit leader and MLA from Gujarat's Vadgam constituency, could be made a working president of Congress' state unit, suggest sources. In order to rejuvenate the grand old party ahead of the crucial Gujarat assembly polls in 2022 and Lok Sabha polls in 2024, the Congress has decided to induct two young leaders, Kanhaiya Kumara and Jignesh Mevani,  both from the Left background,  into the party.

Sources also confirmed that during the talks in the past Kanhaiya Kumar had emphasized having his own team to work with him in Bihar in order to start a movement in the state and then gradually take it to the national level.

The Congress in Bihar in the recent Assembly polls was almost routed. It could manage to win just 19 seats while contesting 70 seats with the Grand Alliance and its performance was considered one of the reasons for the defeat the alliance suffered.  Meanwhile, Mevani has been full of praises lately for Congress, lauding the party's decision to appoint a Dalit chief minister in Punjab.
