Kanye West's alter ego Ye made an appearance on Tucker Carlson Tonight on Thursday. The hip-hop artist and fashion designer talked about the significance of wearing a "white lives matter" shirt earlier this week. Since then, he has faced a lot of criticism for donning the shirt, which he maintains is not inherently offensive.
"I had someone call me last night and said anybody wearing a ‘white lives matter’ shirt is going to be green-lit, and that means they're going to beat them up if they wear it,” Ye shared. “Okay, green-light me then.” "So, the answer to why I wrote ‘white lives matter on a shirt is because they do,” Ye added. “It's the obvious thing."
Ye acknowledged that he too found the clothing amusing. He remembered making fun of it with his father, Ray West. “I thought the shirt was a funny shirt,” Ye said. “I thought the idea of me wearing it was funny. And I said, 'Dad, why did you think it was funny?' He said, 'Just a Black man stating the obvious.'”
Ye insisted he was wearing the shirt for charitable reasons, but he was also spotted wearing it with far-right Republican commentator Candace Owens. Ye proudly wore one of the controversial U.S. President Donald Trump's trademarks "Make America Great Hats" as evidence of your support for him. The Anti-Defamation League has also identified "White lives matter" as a white nationalist slogan.
