New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday heard the matter of bulldozers' action by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation against encroachments in Jahangirpuri. Meanwhile, on the plea of Congress leader and lawyer Kapil Sibal, appearing for the petitioner, the court made it clear that bulldozers' action cannot be stopped across the country. However, the court has upheld the stay on the corporation's activities in Jahangirpuri. The matter will be heard again in the top court after two weeks.

Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, who is opposing the encroachment in Jahangirpuri, said the encroachment was being made an issue. We want this kind of action to be stopped all over the country. To this, the top court said, "We cannot stop the act of vandalism across the country. Congress leader Sibal said, "I mean, the use of bulldozers should be banned in this way. To which the top court said that, sabotage is always done by bulldozers. Well, we understood your point. To this, Sibal said, "I mean, before taking any such action, a notice should be issued that you remove the encroachment or we will remove it.''

During the hearing on Jahangirpuri, another advocate for the petitioner, Dushyant Dave, said that it is an issue of national importance. Never before has such action taken place after a riot. This is targeting a community (Muslim). Advocate Dushyant Dave has questioned the role of the Delhi Police. Dave told the court that the Delhi Police, in its FIR, has said that the procession was taken out without permission. The Supreme Court questioned this, saying it was not an issue. Dave said that these two things are connected. Dave said that processions were taken out without permission. The riots then erupted. The police then charged people from a particular community. The municipal corporation then took action.

Questioning the action of the municipal corporation, Dave said, "There are 1731 unauthorised colonies in Delhi. About 50 million people live in it. But the same colony is being targeted. You destroyed the houses. You have targeted the poor. You should take action in South Delhi or posh colonies." The Solicitor General told the court that, as far as Jahangirpuri is concerned, I have taken cognizance of the matter. We want to remove encroachments from Jahangirpuri so that the way is cleared. The campaign was launched in January. This was followed by action in January, February and March. The next time the action was to be taken on April 19. They were clearing encroachments and garbage. All this happened when the organizations started interfering. Some buildings are illegal and are built on the road, notices were sent to them. In 2021, a petition was filed on behalf of the market association, on which the high court had also ordered the removal of encroachments. On the petitioners' allegation of targeting Muslims, the Solicitor General said that the houses of more Hindus than Muslims have been demolished in Khargone in Madhya Pradesh, so the allegations are baseless. At the same time, the Supreme Court has sought a response from the central government and the state governments on the matter.
