MYSURU: Three people have been apprehended in connection with the murder of a retired Intelligence Bureau (IB) official in Mysuru, police said.
The suspect was being questioned by the police, and the murder's motive was still under investigation.
R.N. Kulkarni, a former IB official, was killed on November 4 while out on a stroll on Mysuru University's Manasa Gangothri campus. The incident was initially registered as a hit-and-run.
Later, the CCTV evidence made it abundantly evident that the 82-year-old IB officer had been struck and killed by a car. The victim's neighbour, with whom the victim had a land dispute, was suspected by the victim's family to be involved.
Three special teams have been set up by the police department to look into the matter. Kulkarni had come from Sharadanagar by car to Manasa Gangothri campus for evening walk, when the incident took place.
Dr. Chandra Gupta, the commissioner of the Mysuru Police, said it was unclear why the victim was killed.
Kulkarni had retired 23 years ago. The authorities were looking for hints because the car used to carry out the crime lacked registration numbers.
Police said that the local suspects have disappeared after Kulkarni's family members suspected their role. Police were further investigating the matter.
Kulkarni is a native of the Haveri district's Savanur. In 1963, he had joined the Intelligence Bureau. For three and a half decades, he had worked for the IB in various capacities. He had worked for the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and other departments of the central government.
