Karnataka all set to receive Kharge on maiden visit as AICC chief

KALABURAGI: On Saturday, newly elected AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge will make his first trip back to his hometown Kalaburagi.

The Congress and Dalit organisations have made elaborative arrangements to give him a regal welcome when he lands here on Saturday. A convention called "Kalyana Kranthi" is being organised by the grand-old party, in which attendees from seven districts and 41 Assembly constituencies will take part.

After he arrives in Kalaburagi by a special flight from New Delhi, Kharge will be taken in a procession for 4 kilometres. The party leader will thereafter participate in the convention being held on the N.V. grounds. College.

Party's state in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, Opposition leader in Legislative Council B.K. Hariprasad, Opposition leader Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Congress President DK. Shivkumar will be present at the convention.
Political experts are describing the massive convention as a showing of political power of the Congress in north Karnataka.

Kharge has suffered a humiliating loss in the latest parliamentary elections to BJP candidate Umesh Jadhav. He thereafter received the nomination to lead the opposition in the Rajya Sabha and later won the AICC President election.

A prominent leader of oppressed classes, Kharge dislikes being branded as Dalit leader. However, the exploited and downtrodden classes across the state still see him as their icon.
