BENGALURU: The Karnataka Assembly session, which begins on Monday, is set to be a high-octane showdown between the ruling BJP government and the opposition Congress over contentious subjects including the anti-conversion law, the Mekedatu project, and the hijab row.

On Monday, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot is set to speak to the joint session. This session, the BJP plans to introduce the contentious anti-conversion law in the Legislative Council. It was passed during the winter session of the Assembly in Belagavi Suvarna Soudha.

The law is expected to cause a stir because the Congress is expected to oppose it, while the BJP is poised to pass it in the Council despite only having a one-seat majority. The Congress is also planning to criticise the state administration for failing to start work on the Mekedatu project, which is opposed by Tamil Nadu.

During the third Covid-19 wave, it organised a major padayatra to demand that the project be started immediately, but it was forced to cease after the court intervened.

The raging hijab dispute will also be a key area of contention between the ruling party and both the Congress and the JD (S). Despite the fact that the case is in court, the subject is certain to cause a lot of drama in both houses of the Assembly.
