BANGALORE: In response to the petition about the border dispute with Maharashtra, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai issued a letter to the opposition leaders on Wednesday and is considering holding an all-party conference shortly.

Bommai had given Siddaramaiah, the leader of the opposition in the legislative assembly, and B.K. Hariprasad, the leader of the opposition in the legislative council, with full details of the government position, the creation of a team of attorneys, and the actions performed thus far.

Before the Supreme Court's review of the related petition, Chief Minister Bommai met with Advocate General Prabhuling Navadgi in the meantime.

The Maharashtra government petitioned the Supreme Court in 2004 to assert its rights over Belagavi city and 865 villages in four Karnataka districts.

Mukul Rohatgi, Sham Diwan, Uday Holla, and Maruthi Jirale, senior counsels, are the representatives of the Karnataka government before the Supreme Court. Bommai argued that the Supreme Court would not take the Maharashtra government's case into consideration.

Maharashtra Ekikarana Samithi (MES), which was founded in 1948 with the primary purpose of ensuring that Belagavi joins Maharashtra, has been opposing the merger of Belagavi with Karnataka.

In the most recent local and assembly elections in Karnataka, candidates for the Congress and the BJP triumphed and made attempts to defeat candidates for the MES.

To send a statement that Belagavi will remain a crucial part of Karnataka, the BJP and JD(S) coalition government built the "Suvarna Soudha" at Belagavi and began holding winter assembly sessions. However, MES party members have persisted in working toward their goals.
