Bangalore: In Karnataka, BJP has given the ticket to the state Deputy CM Laxman Savadi on the lone Legislative Council Member (MLC) seat vacated by the resignation of the Congress leader. Congress has decided not to field candidates due to the lack of numbers. It is being told that Laxman Savadi will be elected unopposed on 17 February.

Laxman Savadi became deputy CM in August last year without being a member of any House. According to the rules, it is necessary to become a member of a House within 6 months. The resignation of Congress leader Rizwan has proved beneficial for Savadi. In August last year, CM BS Yeddyurappa appointed Laxman Savadi as deputy CM when the BJP government was formed, giving the gift of destabilizing the Congress-JDS government.
He resigned from the Legislative Council membership after MLC Rizwan Arshad won the Shivaji Nagar seat of Congress in the Assembly by-election held in December last year, after which the Election Commission issued a notification for the only vacant seat in the state. If no candidate has landed against Laxman Savadi by the due date, then there will be no need for an election and he will get a certificate of uncontested election.
