BENGALURU: The government of Karnataka has reversed its decision to make Kannada a mandatory language requirement for undergraduate students.
According to the new order, students who do not wish to study the local language will not be compelled to do so until further orders from the High Court. The decision was made in light of the High Court's interim order in this matter. As per the order, students who have already enrolled in the course will also have the option of studying in a language other than Kannada. Attendance will be adjusted in accordance with the new language.
The circular, dated January 21, is addressed to all university vice presidents and registrars, public and private. Additionally, principals of aided and unaided colleges have been directed in this regard.
On August 7, 2021, the state government made Kannada learning mandatory for students pursuing graduate degrees in the state. The government maintained that the order is consistent with the National Education Policy's implementation (NEP). The government has mandated that students who have not been exposed to Kannada in school spend one semester studying functional Kannada.
