From the culture to the artefacts here, a large number of foreign tourists including the countrymen come throughout the year to see the artefacts. The Chennakeshava Temple and the Keshav Temple on the banks of the River Cauvery at Somnathpura in Karnataka are located 38 km east of Mysore city.

About 9 centuries ago, the Hoysala Empire in South India was at its peak. The Keshav Temple under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is a wonderful specimen of Hoysala architecture. This temple is dedicated to the Chennakeshava form of Lord Vishnu. It means Sundar (Chenna) and Vishnu (Keshav). One of the best temples in India in terms of architecture and sculpture, this temple was looted several times but was repeatedly renovated by the then rulers. Recently, secret temples on the country's own micro-blogging platform Koo App have put the beautiful history of this temple in front of the world through its official handle.

Vishnuvardhan built the temple

Chennakeshava temple of Belur was built by King Vishnuvardhan in 1117 AD. It took three generations of the dynasty 103 years to build this excellent artwork of architecture. It is said that more than 1000 workers had contributed to its construction.

Amazing texture

The entire temple is situated on a high platform like the rest of the Hoysala temples. There are three temples located in the complex, which are built with the finest carvings. In these three temples, Keshav, Janardhana and Venugopala were idols of Lord God, but the idol of Lord Keshava disappeared by the invaders, after which there are only two statues left here.

Hoysala dynasty of Belur

Hoysala Rajvanshis originally belonged to the Malanadu region of the Western Ghats. He was considered to be particularly proficient in combat skills. He took advantage of the ongoing internal war between the Chalukya and Kalchuri dynasties to establish hegemony over many areas of Karnataka. By the 13th century, he had established empires in most parts of Karnataka, some areas of Tamil Nadu and many regions of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Hoysala architecture

The Hoysala period is considered to be the golden period of this region. In South India, the Hoysala Rajabhas made a very important contribution in the field of art, architecture, literature, religion and development. Initially, the city of Belur was their capital. Over time he transferred to Halebidu, also known as Dwarasamudra. Today the Hoysala dynasty is especially remembered for its excellent Hoysala architecture.

92 temples adorned with Hoysala architecture

At present, there are about 92 temples adorned with Hoysala architecture, of which 35 temples are located in the Hassan district. Among them is Lakshmi Narasimha Temple at Naggehalli, Veer Narayan Temple at Belwadi, Ishwar Temple at Arsikere, Bucheshwar Temple at Koravangala, Jain Basadi in Halebidu, Brahmeshwara Temple in Kikkeri among the many other temples which are famous for Hoysala architecture.

12th-century Hoysala temple is now in the race for UNESCO World Heritage

The Hoysala temples of Belur, Halebid and Somnathpura in Karnataka have been included as India's nomination for the World Heritage List for the year 2022-2023. The Union Ministry of Culture had given information in this regard on Monday. The holy monuments of Hoysala have been on UNESCO's probable list since 15 April 2014 and testify to the country's rich historical and cultural heritage.
