Karnataka JDS MP Prajwal Revanna to Appear Before SIT Amid Sex Tape Controversy

Bangalore: Karnataka JDS MP Prajwal Revanna, who left the country after his sex tapes went viral and several sexual harassment cases were filed against him, has announced that he will appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on May 31.

"Don’t mistake me, on the 31st at 10 am, I will be in front of the SIT and I will cooperate. I trust the judiciary and these are false cases against me. I trust the law," he stated to the media.

The 33-year-old Hassan MP, who is the grandson of JDS patriarch and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, is facing multiple charges of sexually abusing women. He departed the country on April 26 after videos of him allegedly abusing women surfaced.

Revanna has called the allegations "a political conspiracy" and said he has been in "depression and isolation". He also apologized to JDS leaders and party workers for not disclosing his location.

"I want to apologize to my family members, my Kumaranna [HD Kumaraswamy], and the party workers for not providing proper information about my whereabouts abroad. On April 26th, when the elections were over, there was no case against me. The SIT wasn't formed. Two or three days after I left, I saw these allegations against me on YouTube. I also wrote to the SIT via my lawyer asking for seven days' time," he explained.

Revanna further alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other senior leaders publicly discussed the allegations, saying, "This is a political conspiracy". The JDS and BJP are alliance partners in Karnataka.

"I apologize as I went into depression and into isolation," he added.

A Special Court for Elected Representatives issued an arrest warrant on May 18 against Revanna, following an application by the SIT. Interpol has also issued a 'Blue Corner Notice' seeking information on his whereabouts, at the request of the SIT via the CBI.

Revanna, son of JDS MLA HD Revanna, is reportedly in Germany. His statement came three days after HD Deve Gowda issued a stern warning to his grandson, asking him to return to India, surrender to the police, or face consequences. Last week, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting the cancellation of Prajwal's diplomatic passport.

MLA HD Revanna is also facing two cases along with his son. One case involves the molestation of a cook, who was also allegedly raped by Prajwal, and the other involves the kidnapping of a woman. He is currently out on bail.

Responding to Prajwal's statement about his return, JDS president HD Kumaraswamy said he is "convinced now that he has some faith in our party workers."

"Deve Gowda had given him a warning and I, too, had appealed to him to come back and face the law. I'm convinced that he has considered our request and has respect for our party workers," Kumaraswamy said.

On Prajwal's conspiracy allegations, the former Chief Minister said, "All this will come out in the SIT investigation".

Commenting on Prajwal's apology, Kumaraswamy expressed, "I'm happy that he has some affection for our party workers".
