Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that an all-party meeting had unanimously determined that local body elections will be place only when Backward Classes were given reservation.

Bommai said, the Advocate General's legal opinion has been requested in this matter. "We reviewed all conceivable options to guarantee reservation for Backward Classes and how we can organise elections in light of the Supreme Court judgement at the all-party meeting. The legal aspects were discussed by the Advocate General "Bommai remarked.

In addition, "We can either hold elections after forming a Commission and receiving its findings, or we can submit a review petition with the Supreme Court. However, holding elections without a reserve for the backward classes is difficult." In a recent order, the Supreme Court struck down the OBC reservation of 27% in local body elections.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka Chief Minister said that reservations for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes will be raised in line with population growth.

"In this regard, the previous administration established the Justice Nagamohan Das Commission. The Commission presented its findings to the former government of BS Yediyurappa. The Commission has proposed that the reserve quotas for SC and ST be increased. We must make a judgment in this regard "Bommai remarked.
