BENGALURU: Police in Karnataka arrested a 26-year-old man on Saturday on suspicion of murdering his mother over refusing to purchase him a cellphone. Deepak, a resident of Lucas Layout in Mylasandra, has been identified as the culprit arrested. Deepak reportedly choked his mother Fathima Mary (50) to death on June 1,  police said.

Joyce Mary, the accused's sister, had filed a report about her mother's absence.

Fathima Mary sold greens and eked out a living for the family. On that fatal day, she had gone to the farm to harvest greens for sale as was customary. Joyce Mary had requested that her brother pick up her mother from the farm.
Deepak had contacted his father, Arogyaswamy, to inform him that his mother had passed out on the side of the road. Deepak, on the other hand, had admitted to killing his mother during the interrogation.

Deepak asked that his mother buy him a phone after meeting her, police said. The victim said that she lacked the financial means to purchase one for him. In a fit of rage, the accused strangled her with her saree. The culprit had stolen Rs 700 from her after killing her and fled the scene.
