Bangalore: The hijab controversy in Karnataka has once again hit the headlines. Six Muslim girl students, who had reached the college wearing hijabs at Uppinangadi Government Pre-University College in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, were suspended on Thursday (June 2, 2022). Even after being warned several times, these students had reached the college wearing hijab. Therefore, the Principal of Uppinangadi PU College has decided to suspend these girl students after a meeting of the staff.

According to the college administration, these girl students have been suspended for a week because they feared that it could also provoke other girl students to protest. The Karnataka High Court had upheld the state government's decision to ban the hijab in educational institutions. Since then, wearing of any kind of religious dress in college classes is prohibited. It is being told that this action has been taken against these 6 girl students when they violated the order of the state government and the order of the High Court.

Even after the ban on the hijab, 16 girl students arrived at another college in Karnataka on Thursday (June 2, 2022) wearing hijab. The girls, who had arrived at the college of Mangaluru University near Hampanakatte wearing hijabs, had sought permission to sit in the classroom. But the principal of the college refused to let those girl students go to the classes and returned them. The girl students had gone to the district commissioner's office and complained that they were not being allowed to sit in the class wearing a hijab. The DC had then asked them to follow the college's rulebook, the government and the court's orders.
