BANGALORE: Karnataka police have detained a B.Com student on charges of kidnapping a 14-year-old boy to arrange a fee amount for the continuation of studies here, police said on Wednesday.

The detained student has been identified as M. Sunil Kumar (23), who attended an evening college. Also, his assistant Y.V. Nagesh, a resident of Mandikal in Chikkaballapur town, was detained by the police.

The accused allegedly abducted Bhavesh, the son of Ramesh Babu, a corporate company manager, on September 2 at his Manyata Layout home. The defendant was aware that Bhavesh slept by himself in the cellar chamber.
The suspect knocked on Bhavesh's room door while wearing a mask over his face. He was threatened with a knife when he answered the door, and the kidnappers drove off in his father's car.

The accused made a call to the boy's father next day,  from his mobile and demanded Rs 15 lakh as ransom for the release of his son. Ramesh Babu and his wife arranged the money and paid them.

On the outskirts of the city, he was instructed to set the cash bag down close to a railroad track. Bhavesh was freed when the accused collected the money. Ramesh Babu had reported the Sampigehalli police after receiving his son back.

The squad led by Inspector K.T. Nagaraju and ACP T.Rangappa was successful in solving the case. They focused on the suspect after reviewing mobile location data and CCTV images. When questioned, the accused revealed all.
Sunil Kumar said, he turned to crime to pay his college tuition. He was a gardener and a labourer in the building industry. He was unable to pay the charge, and his buddies did not lend a hand.

A few months ago, he had gone to Bhavesh's house to work in the garden. The suspect discussed the possibility of making money by kidnapping the boy with Bhavesh. Nagesh, a cab driver who had heard about his concept, had agreed to the kidnapping scheme.

The accused paid his college tuition after receiving the ransom money. He had also paid a deposit for a Yelahanka accommodation. He had bought a new bike and digital camera and kept the remaining money with him.
