BANGALORE: The new Congress government in Karnataka is all set to formulate a New Education Policy by scrapping the National Education Policy (NEP) implemented by the previous Bharatiya Janata Party government in Karnataka, sources said.
DK Shivakumar, the state's newly designated deputy Chief Minister, has previously announced that the Congress will not put the NEP into effect. Instead, he said, the government would create a new approach to education. Referring to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur city, Shivakumar even labelled NEP as the Nagpur Education Policy.
On Thursday, Shivakumar said, "There ought to have been a thorough discussion of the NEP. I am an education expert by choice. I oversee educational institutions and hold the positions of president or trustee in a number of organisations. I'm unable to comprehend the NEP. I made two or three attempts to study and comprehend, but failed. Shivakumar said that despite talking to students and teachers, he was still unable to understand the NEP in its entirety.
Siddaramaiah, the chief minister, had called for the NEP to be reversed and claimed that it was designed to educate kids communal values. He claimed that the NEP infringes upon state rights.
The Congress government wants to take away all new additions to the curricula for the student body, source said. The nation's objectives and preferences will be reflected in the new policy. The subject would be thoroughly discussed, according to Shivakumar.
Former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai commented on the news, saying, "It has taken over three years to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) in Karnataka. It was decided to form the committee under the direction of U.R. Rao, and all states agreed. Following this, a task force was established prior to implementation, and it was subsequently implemented in higher education and primary education, he said.
