Karnataka under-construction building collapse: 3 dead, 56 rescued

A four-story under construction building collapsed in north Karnataka on Tuesday evening, killing three people and leaving several others trapped or critically injured. The death toll in the multi-story building collapse in Dharwad on Tuesday afternoon has risen to three and rescue operations are underway on Wednesday to safeguard the people trapped under the debris.

According to reports, At least 56 people were rescued from the site in Dharwad Kumareshwar Nagar. Giridhar Kuknoor, District surgeon in Dharwad said, "43 people have been admitted to Civil Hospital, while 13 people have been referred to SDM and KIMS hospital." With more people feared trapped, relief and rescue operations continued overnight and were still underway on Wednesday morning. About 10 others were still suspected to be trapped undertones of cement and mortar. Deputy Commissioner M. Deepa said so far 56 injured persons have been rescued and the death toll stands at three. Rescue operations, which began on Tuesday evening, continued overnight. The reason for the accident was being ascertained, officials said.

Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy also said rescue efforts were being conducted on a war footing and urged locals not to panic. Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy expressed "shock" over the incident on Twitter. "Shocked to learn about the collapse of an under-construction building in Dharwad. Concerned departments should not compromise on anything during the process of rescue operations, first-aid and rehabilitation of the affected. My prayers with the injured." He tweeted.
