BANGALORE: CBI has filed an FIR in the phone tapping case which is stirring the politics of Karnataka. The tapping happened to big leaders during the coalition of Congress-JDS government in Karnataka. After the case came out, the present BJP government handed it over to the CBI. According to officials, the agency has filed an FIR under the leadership of CM B. S. Yediyurappa at the request of the Karnataka government. The scandal has been gaining momentum since the revelation of Janata Dal (Secular) disqualified MLA AH Vishwanath.

Vishwanath, who was the state president of JDS and revolted, accused the HD Kumaraswamy government of tapping phones and spying over 300 people including him. Several Congress leaders, including Siddaramaiah, M. Mallikarjun Kharge and Home Minister MB Patil in the coalition government demanded an inquiry, while other prominent party leaders and former minister DK Shivakumar rejected the espionage allegations and supported Kumaraswamy.

According to sources, the phones of Siddaramaiah's close friends were also tapped. Siddaramaiah was the head of the coalition coordination committee at that time. Several BJP leaders, including former chief minister Jagadish Shettar, accused Kumaraswamy of tapping phones to save his government. Kumaraswamy, however, denied any such thing and said that he was ready for any investigation.
