Karti Chidambaram faces charges of unlawful gratification by CBI

NEW DELHI: Officials said on Tuesday that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a new case against Lok Sabha MP Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, for allegedly facilitating the visa of 250 Chinese nationals in exchange for unlawful payoff of Rs 50 lakh.

They said the CBI began coordinated search operations at nine locations throughout the country on Tuesday morning, including Karti Chidambaram's home in Chennai.

Three places in Chennai, three in Mumbai, and one each in Karnataka, Punjab, and Odisha are being searched, they said. "I have lost track of how many times it's happened. 'Must be a record," Karti said, without elaborating.

The CBI has accused that Karti Chidambaram accepted a Rs 50 lakh bribe to assist the visa of 250 Chinese nationals during the UPA era, according to authorities. They claim he is already being investigated for obtaining Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval for INX media.
