Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, is gearing up to host the fifth edition of the World Nomad Games from September 8 to 13, 2024. Under the theme "The Gathering of the Great Steppe," this remarkable event will serve as a celebration of the rich cultural heritage, traditions, and competitive spirit of nomadic civilizations that once thrived across the vast steppes of Eurasia.

Often referred to as the "Olympics of Central Asia," the World Nomad Games bring together the unique and diverse cultures of nomadic peoples from around the world. The event will feature more than 2,000 participants from approximately 100 countries, who will showcase their skills in 21 traditional sports that have been passed down through generations. These competitions highlight the strength, agility, and intellect that are central to nomadic life.

Beyond the exhilarating sporting events, the World Nomad Games will also offer a platform for intellectual challenges and cultural exploration. This year's program features unique and lesser-known sports such as mas-wrestling, the national sport of Yakutia, and Mangala, a strategic game from Türkiye. Additionally, the ancient intellectual game of Ovari, originating from West Africa and first documented by English explorer Richard Jobson in 1620, will also be featured. Played on a board with 12 small holes, Ovari is a two-player game where participants aim to collect the most balls in their vault by strategically moving pieces across the board.

The excitement of the games will be complemented by a scientific conference dedicated to the preservation and study of nomadic heritage. Scholars, historians, and cultural enthusiasts from around the globe will convene to explore the enduring significance of nomadic traditions and their relevance in today's world. This conference will delve into how ancient practices can offer insight and inspiration for modern life.

The 2024 World Nomad Games promise to be an extraordinary fusion of history, culture, and competition, offering a rare glimpse into the legacy of nomadic civilizations and their contributions to global heritage.
