NAIROBI, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's Ministry of Health said Wednesday it has administered 19 million COVID-19 vaccine doses as the country works to hit its target of vaccinating 27 million people.

The ministry said that it had issued 19.01 million vaccines in total and out of the doses, 16.8 million have been administered to adults while the rest to teenagers aged 15 to 18.

According to the ministry, a total of 535,000 booster doses have also been issued.

"The government is working to vaccinate a targeted population of 27.2 million," the ministry said in a statement issued in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

It said some 8.7 million adults and 369,835 teenagers have been fully vaccinated.

The vaccination drive has received a boost lately due to the rise in COVID-19 cases in the last month which health experts attributed to a new wave.

The country has so far received 27.8 million vaccine doses that include Moderna, Astrazeneca, Sinopharm, Johnson & Johnson, and Pfizer.

The ministry reported 239 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, pushing the total confirmed cases to 332,296.
