Kochi: The Kerala Catholic Bishops' Committee (KCBC) has announced plans to construct 100 houses for families who lost their homes in the recent landslides in Churalmala, Mundakai, and Kozhikode Vilangad areas of Wayanad. This decision was made during a meeting on August 5, chaired by Cardinal Basilios Clemis Katholika Bawa at Mount St. Thomas in Kakkanad.
In the first phase of their relief efforts, the KCBC will provide homes to 100 families affected by the disaster. These homes will be located as per government suggestions and will come equipped with essential household appliances.
The initiative involves collaborative efforts from all dioceses, monastic communities, church institutions, individuals, and systems within the Kerala Catholic Church. The Kerala Social Service Forum, the Church’s social service arm operating under the Justice Peace and Development Commission of KCBC, will lead the relief operations.
In addition to housing, expert medical teams from the Church's hospitals will be available to provide necessary medical services, and ongoing trauma counseling will be offered to those affected by the disaster.
The KCBC has expressed deep sympathy for the victims, acknowledging that while words of comfort may not fully alleviate the suffering, the collective goodwill of the Malayalee community is evident in the support and promises of assistance received.
Meanwhile, Kerala ADGP (Law and Order) MR Ajith Kumar reported that the rescue and search operations for the landslides, which have claimed over 300 lives in Wayanad, are in their final stages. As of August 2, the death toll stands at 308, with 226 bodies and 181 body parts recovered. Efforts are now focusing on searching the remaining inaccessible areas.
