KOCHI: A 17-year-old girl donated a portion of her liver to save her ailing father, who was suffering from chronic liver disease with hepatocellular cancer.

The transplant surgery was done at Rajagiri Hospital at Aluva on February 9. A student of Plus Two at the Sacred Heart Convent School in Thrissur, Devananda is returning to normal life amidst the happiness of sharing a part of her liver to save her 40-eight-year-old father Pratheesh, a resident of Kolazhi in Thirssur.

After receiving approval from the Kerala High Court in December 2022 to donate a piece of her liver to her sick father, the transplant procedure was carried out. Once an expert committee established by the appropriate authority under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994 concluded that Devananda could not be excused from the prohibition on organ donation by minors imposed by the Act and Rules, she moved the court.

After another group of specialists recommended in her favour, Justice V. G. Arun, who was considering her petition, ordered the committee to rethink its decision. Devananda received appreciation from the judge for her efforts in trying to save her father.

Pratheesh, who owned a café in Thrissur, had liver illness and a malignant lesion in his liver, and his health had gotten worse since being diagnosed. Devananda came forward to donate a piece of her liver to her father after the family's hunt for a compatible donor proved fruitless. According to a letter sent by the hospital administration, she had made significant dietary adjustments and joined a nearby gym for regular exercise to make sure her liver was in the optimum condition for donation.

A medical team under the direction of Dr. Ramachandran Narayanamenon, Chief of Multi-Organ Transplant Services, performed the surgery. It stated that the management had waived her medical fees in recognition of her heroic actions.
