Kochi: The Kerala government has made it clear that it cannot implement the National Population Register (NPR) in the state. The government convened a special cabinet meeting on Monday and decided to inform the Census Registrar General that Kerala State would not implement the NPR during the census campaign. This decision of the Pinarayi Vijayan government of Kerala can create a situation of conflict between the Center and the State.
State Local Administration Minister AC Moideen has said that CM Pinarayi Vijayan has already clarified that the state will inform the Census Directorate that some specific questions for NPR preparations will not be included here. He told that in the cabinet meeting it was decided that the census program would be carried forward in the state, but people would not be asked to answer questions related to NPR.
The leftist government of Kerala has taken a rebel stance not only on the issue of NPR or NRC but also on the issue of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Just yesterday, on this issue, Governor Arif Muhammad Khan made it clear that he would not become a 'silent spectator' in this matter and would ensure that the law of the country is followed.
