The criminal case against ex-legislators of the Kerala state assembly was withdrawn by the Kerala government on Tuesday. Congress has objected to the move and protested against it.

The case was filed after Left Democratic Front (LDF) lawmakers created a ruckus in the assembly in 2015 when the budget was being presented KM Mani, then finance minister of the state. The case was filed by United Democratic Front (UDF) who was in power them.

The legislators, belonging to LDF, protested against Mani who was alleged to be involved in ‘Bar scam’. They created chaos in the assembly and damaged public property worth Rs. 2 lakh. Six MLAs were booked for the crime and a case was filed.

Congress has opposed the withdrawal of the case against the MLAs by Kerala government. MM Hassan, President, Kerala Congress termed the move as shocking.

“This is a real shame and it shows to what extent the Vijayan government will go to cover up the wrong doings of their people. This case has been withdrawn after V Sivankutty (one of the six legislators), who lost the 2016 assembly polls, wrote a letter to Vijayan,” said Hassan.

After coming in power, LDF MLA V Sivankutty claimed that case was filed against him and other MLAs for political gains. This led to the decision of withdrawing the case after consultation between law department and home department.
