Kochi: The Pinarayi Vijayan government in Kerala has made a significant decision for drivers who break traffic laws. To drive while intoxicated and disobey traffic laws, social service will now be required for at least 3 days. 

In addition, they will receive refresher instruction in traffic laws. The state's Left-leaning government made this choice in response to a recent, traumatic bus accident. This accident claimed the lives of 9 persons.

The decision to establish social service and training requirements against such drivers was reportedly made on Thursday. It was decided at a high-level meeting presided over by Transport Minister Antony Raju that drivers involved in serious auto accidents who were also found to be operating their vehicles while intoxicated would be required to perform at least three days of community service at trauma centres and other hospital care facilities.

According to the minister's office, drivers who break the law will also have their licences suspended and must attend a three-day mandatory training course at the Institute of Driver Training and Research (IDTR). Recently, a private tourist bus and a bus operated by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) crashed near Vadakkanchery in the Palakkad district of Kerala, killing nine persons, including five schoolchildren.
