THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government's multi-billion dollar development plan will soon give the area's famous Kovalam beach and the seashores that surround it a facelift and new amenities to draw in more visitors.
The 'Development of Kovalam and Surrounding Beaches' project, worth Rs 93 crore, was approved on Thursday, February 23, by the Kerala State Cabinet, presided over by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
A CMO statement here stated that plans call for the revitalization of Kovalam, one of the most major beaches in the country's southern region, as well as other nearby beaches and the implementation of measures to ensure coastline conservation.
Kovalam is popular among both foreign and Indian, local tourists, it said.
The project, which would be carried out in two parts, would include infrastructure and transit facilities, park refurbishment, among other things.
The project involves renovation of Kovalam beach, walkway, lighthouse and Adimalathura beach, apart from arranging for infrastructure facilities for the tourists at the tourist destination.
The Kovalam beach will be developed in such a way that all the areas on the beach would be made accessible to all kinds of tourists. The beach and its surroundings would also be beautified further and more amenities will be introduced to the tourists, the meeting decided.
The Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) has produced a project of Rs 93 crore, and the Cabinet approved by Water and Power Consultancy Services India Limited (WAPCOS) as the special purpose entity to carry it out, the CMO said.
WAPCOS is a Central Public Sector Organization that reports to the Government of India's Ministry of Jal Shakti.
