THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a bid to making it easier for teachers to use high-tech equipment in the classroom, Kerala General Education Minister V. Sivankutty on Saturday unveiled the "KITE Board" application, a multipurpose, device-independent, FOSS-based, interactive tool.
Sivankutty said, the KITE Board is the State's latest contribution. The State has already sparked a digital revolution in the education sector by utilising solely free software, and the new addition will aid in establishing engaging, modern learning environments in classrooms.
Students who can't make it to class would benefit from the KITE Board's ability to store content that the teacher has written on the blackboard in PDF format. It also allows for the screen recording of activities performed on the Board.
The laptop's built-in camera can be used to record classroom activities like science experiments, which can then be displayed on the KITE Board.
K. Anvar Sadath, CEO, KITE said, they have undertaken the necessary preparations to ensure that the KITE Board application is accessible on all laptops in schools as a straightforward upgrade comparable to the introduction of E-Language Lab software.
All school IT coordinators would receive training on the new programme during the residential "Techie Teacher" IT training that would be held in October.
The "KITE Board," formed by Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), is a Free Software (FOSS)-based application that can be used with the KITE/GNU Linux 20.04 Operating System, which is installed on roughly two lakh laptops in 16,000 schools as part of the Hi-Tech projects. It does not require any special hardware, such as expensive interactive boards that are available on the market.
Teachers might use a laptop to write and type on a KITE Board, and they could also display those writings into classrooms using a projector, just like they would with a blackboard.
The ability of teachers to pre-load resources from the Samagra portal, such as videos, photos, and presentations, into the KITE Board and use them either online or offline as needed is a special feature of the application. The KITE Board also makes it easier to use online resources like Wikipedia.
