THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: On Thursday, the installation of survey stones for the SilverLine project caused violent scenes near Kaniyapuram, with four protesters injured in a battle with police.
While the survey has been temporarily halted, authorities have opened an investigation into a police officer accused of mistreating the agitators. The Congress and K-Rail SilverLine Virudha Janakeeya Samithi activists stopped attempts by authorities from the Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd. (K-Rail) and the Revenue Department to resume the exercise at Karichara after nearly two weeks.
Thiruvananthapuram Rural police summoned a big police posse, who violently removed the demonstrators from the area. In the midst of the chaos, civil police officer Shabeer of the Mangalapuram police station was captured on tape kicking a protester.
District Police Chief (Thiruvananthapuram Rural) Divya V. Gopinath instructed Special Branch Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Stuart Keeler to investigate the event after it sparked anger.
While the demonstrators claimed the police used force without notice, the police denied the charges. They claimed to have merely been there to safeguard the survey officials and to assist with the continuing job.
