Thiruvananthapuram: The United Democratic Front (UDF) of Kerala has given a notice seeking the assembly to pass a resolution for the removal of speaker P Sreeramakrishnan from the post. The notice was given by M Ummer, the Indian Union Muslim League member in the legislative assembly. In the notice, he said the accused in the gold smuggling case have mentioned the name of the speaker saying that they had a strong connection with him.
In a notice, The Manjeri MLA had earlier served a similar notice last July, but the Speaker had refused to accept the resolution, citing technical reasons. The alleged personal relationship of the Speaker with the accused in the gold smuggling case and his presence in the inauguration of a workshop owned by one of them was "not in accordance of the decorum of the House," the notice said.
He also stated that Speaker had inaugurated the car workshop of gold smuggling accused being probed by NIA, thereby failing to uphold the dignity of the office.
The Budget session of the Kerala Assembly is scheduled from January 8. The case, which is currently being probed by the ED (Enforcement Directorate), and the Customs Department, pertains to the smuggling of gold in the state through diplomatic channels.
