Kerala: Veteran Congress leader K Sankaranarayanan no more

Kerala – Palakkad: K Sankaranarayanan, 89, a senior Congress leader who served as governor of six states, died on Sunday in Palakkad.

The minister was the governor of Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Jharkhand at different times. Prior to his appointment as governor, he served in the Kerala government for four years as a minister in various ministries.  He also served as governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Goa, among other states.

At least four times, Sankaranarayanan was elected to the Kerala assembly. In a Congress-led administration led by K Karunakaran and A K Antony, he was in charge of the ministries of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development, Community Development, and Excise.

He was first elected to the fifth Kerala Legislative Assembly (KLA) from Thrithala, then to the 6th KLA from Sreekrishnapuram, the 8th KLA from Ottappalam, and the 11th KLA from Palghat.  He also served as the United Democratic Front's (UDF) Convener for 16 years.

On the death of K Sankaranarayanan, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan extended his condolences. V D Satheesan, the leader of the opposition, Governor Arif Muhammad Khan, and many more leaders from other walks of life have also offered their sympathies.
