Thiruvananthapuram: The Zika virus havoc in Kerala is now moving fast. Dozens of cases have been reported so far and an expert has issued a warning. Experts say the mosquito-borne disease can be more serious than coronavirus disease. In fact, Dr. Naresh Gupta, Director, and Professor, Maulana Azad Medical College, says, "This virus should be tested in the laboratory.'' He also said, "We also need to worry about this virus. It is a virus that is transmitted by mosquito bites and can spread easily to locals. So, I think, if there are Zika cases coming up in a State or a place, there is a need to monitor that State.''

On the other hand, five more people were infected with the Zika virus in Kerala last Thursday. Now the total number of cases of those infected with the virus has gone up to 28. Further, the latest cases in Thiruvananthapuram were confirmed after a sample test at the Regional Centre of the National Institute of Virology in Alappuzha. At the same time, in view of the increasing number of cases of Zika virus, the State Health Minister has convened an emergency meeting last Thursday to discuss the health issue.

Tell all of you that the Zika virus is mostly transmitted by the bite of a mosquito of the Aedes species, which spreads dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever. Referring to the local nature of the outbreak, Dr. Gupta also said that vector-borne disease is more of a concern than covid-19, although many other medical experts have reduced concern suo-à-vis saying that it can be prevented by effective vector control measures.
