Teenagers are self-contradictory yet unique breed. They strive for individuality yet crave peer acceptance.They think they know everything and sometimes become self-destructive.They lack experience and often challenge the authority and neglect rules and regulations as they hate boundaries.
It's not at all easy to handle them whether that teenager is your student or your children or athletes or anyone else.
Here are certain tips that will help you in creating a bond with them and will help you to handle difficult adolescents.
1. Avoid showing them your power: One of the most difficult characteristics of teenagers are they intentionally try to humiliate you and irritate you by creating nuisance but if you don't pay attention, they will stop by themselves as they will come to know if they do anything, it is not bothering you.
2. Focus on the leader: If a group of students in the class creating disturbance affecting the whole class. It's better to call their leader and telling him its negative consequences rather than to punish all the students.
3.Give them space: They need individuality so listen to them what they want and what's their concern. As they become stubborn because they think that adults don't listen to them. Instead, tell them you are ready to listen whatever they wanna tell you. Just give them the opportunity to talk.
4. Show empathy: Understand their situation that why they are reacting like that might be because of study pressure or peer pressure or something else. Don't humiliate them always.
5.Establish clear boundaries: Whether it's home or school or playground or another place, set boundaries for them which enhance discipline. For example, if they give you respect, then they too will get. And other things too like study time and other things likewise.
