Tamil Nadu: Kancheepuram Police has arrested five persons on charges of kidnapping and sexual assault and remanded them to judicial custody. The arrested people include a lawyer, a law college student and an employee of a tea shop. All are residents of Kanchipuram.

According to the police, Gunaseelan, who befriended a 20-year-old woman, took her to a secluded place in Melkathipur village near Kanchipuram in a car on the pretext of a job. After reaching the village, he made her drink an intoxicating drink. She fainted after drinking the soft drink. After sexually assaulting her, Gunaseelan invited four of his friends, who allegedly sexually assaulted her. Police said that they later left him on the highway and fled.

“They took advantage of the helpless woman and sexually assaulted her in the car. They later released him,” a senior police officer said, adding that the incident happened on September 1, but the police acted on the basis of information provided by the local people. The girl was in a state of shock after the incident and did not contact us initially. Later, he complained to us,” he said. A case was registered against the accused under various sections of the IPC.
