SEOUL: The Korean leaders Kim John-un and Moon Jae-in agreed on Friday to work to get rid of all nuclear weapons from the Korean Peninsula and, within the year, following talks with the United States to affirm an official ending of the Korean War, which destroyed the peninsula from 1950 to 1953.

It was the first time when a North Korean leader had ever crossed the threshold of South Korea where the leaders vowed to settle a treaty to replace a ceasefire that has kept a perturbed peace on the divided Korean Peninsula for more than six decades, while eradication of nuclear weapons.

A peace truce has been one of the incentives North Korea has demanded in return for taking apart its nuclear program.

"South and North Korea confirmed the common goal of realising, through complete denuclearization, a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula," read a statement inked by North Korea's supremo, Kim Jong-un, and the South's president, Moon Jae-in, after their official talks at the border village of Panmunjom.

The treaty came at the end of a day of extraordinary diplomatic stagecraft emphasizing hopes for squaring off and disarmament that was live televised around the world, beginning with a smile and handshake that Kim and Moon shared at the border and extending to a calm, 30-minute talk. They had the conclusion of the day in a wooded area of the village.
