North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attended a memorial service for his father Kim Jong-il on the 10th anniversary of his death, according to Pyongyang's state media.

According to reports, the event took place in Pyongyang at the plaza of the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, a mausoleum commemorating the North's former leaders. Kim Jong-il died on December 17, 2011, after reigning over North Korea since his father, the country's founder, Kim Il-sung, died in 1994. Kim Jong-un, the late leader's third son, assumed command of the North in yet another hereditary power transfer.

North Korea has been preparing for the occasion by holding a series of events honouring the late leader and emphasising allegiance to the current leader. The North's official newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun, said in a front-page editorial that the government should press ahead with attempts to meet the first-year goals of its five-year development plan, which was revealed at a January party congress under Kim Jong-leadership. un's
