'Kisan Kranti Padyatra' calls off at Delhi's Kisan Ghat; Ghaziabad schools to remain close

New Delhi: The 'Kisan Kranti Padyatra', which began on September 23, called off at the Kisan Ghat in the national capital Delhi in the early hours of Wednesday.The protest march was began by the Bharatiya Kisan Union. It concluded after the protesting farmers reached Kisan Ghat which is the memorial of Chaudhary Charan Singh, who is a well-known farmer leader on late Tuesday night.

Bharatiya Kisan Union president Naresh Tikait said that during"The 'Kisan Kranti Padyatra' Delhi Police did not permit them to enter, so they protested. Now their aim was to finish the Yatra, and they will go back to their villages.

Earlier, the Delhi Police used water cannons and tear gas to stop the farmers from entering Delhi through Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border. However, later on, the police opened the barricades at the border permitting the entrance of the farmers.

The farmers were protesting to demand loan waiver, lessen in electricity tariff and pension for farmers aged above 60. The yatra started from Haridwar and many farmers from Gonda, Basti and Gorakhpur participated in the protest march. At least 70,000 farmers from Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana staged the Kisan Kranti Padyatra, which ended at the Rajghat.

Due to the agitation, the PM Modi led  Centre accepted most of the demands of the farmers following talks with top leaders of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) . It is the umbrella organization under which thousands of farmers have been staging a protest to force down government for their demands.
