He had studied classical music from his father Pandit Hari Maharaj in his early years. After the death of his father, he studied with his uncle and Pandit Baldev Sahai's disciple Pandit Kanthe Maharaj. Pandit Kishan Maharaj was a well-known tabla player of India and was included in the Banaras Gharana player.
