Mumbai: Bollywood legend Dilip Kumar has bid farewell to the world. With his powerful performance, he made a place in the hearts of people all over the world. Dilip Kumar had acted in a total of 65 films throughout his career, but each of his films made an indelible mark in Hindi cinema. Dilip Kumar was born on December 11, 1922, in Peshawar, undivided Pakistan. Dilip Kumar's real name known as 'Tragedy King' was Yusuf Sarwar Khan. His father's name was Mohammad Sarwar Khan, a businessman by profession. Even the legendary actor in his childhood never thought that he would ever be known as Dilip Kumar.

He has also shared many stories from his life in his book The Substance and the Shadow. He also mentions the tales of yusuf Sarwar Khan becoming dilip kumar.  Yusuf Sarwar Khan was known as a businessman before coming to films. He used to handle his father's business. He used to visit Dadar in Mumbai several times to supply a wooden cot to the British Army Cantt. One day he was waiting for the local train at Churchgate station. It was here that he found Dr. Masani, a psychologist regarding his identity. Masani was on his way to meet Devika Rani, the mistress of Bombay Talkies, but Yusuf had no idea that the meeting was going to change his life.

During that meeting, actress Devika Rani advised him to change his name to Dilip Kumar from Mohammad Yusuf Khan. Devika then gave him a job in the film Jowar Bhata, which was released in 1944. However, the film did not succeed much.  Dilip Kumar starred in actress Noor Jahan Sang's film Jugnu after giving some flops. This was his first hit film. He then gave many super hit films like Shaheed and Mela. He then made Shabnam with Nargis and his friend Raj Kapoor. The film was also a super hit at the box office. The 1950s belonged to Dilip Kumar. This was the time when he gave one hit after another and became known as Tragedy King in Bollywood.
