The same is being sold in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, for one litre of petrol at Rs 104.67 and diesel at Rs 89.79. Petrol prices in Chennai have also remained above Rs 100. Chennai is selling petrol for Rs 101.40 and diesel for Rs 91.43. Petrol and diesel prices were rising steadily early this year, but during Diwali, the central government had cut excise duty on oil, after which prices came down. Excise duty on petrol and diesel was reduced by Rs 5 and Rs 10. Subsequently, various states had also reduced the rates of VAT on petrol and diesel.
