Narali Purnima holds special significance in many states of India. This festival is celebrated especially in South India and is recognized like Shravani Purnima, Raksha Bandhan and Kajari Purnima. This year Narali Purnima will be celebrated on 19 August 2024, Monday.

Significance of Narali Purnima

Narali Purnima is celebrated with great pomp mainly in Maharashtra, especially in coastal areas where fishermen live. On this day, the sea god Varuna is worshiped and coconuts are offered to him. It is believed that this pleases the sea god and provides protection from the dangers of the sea.

The full moon day in the month of Sawan holds special importance, as this time is considered suitable for the worship of Lord Shiva. Coconut is considered a symbol of Lord Shiva's third eye, so on this day coconut and things like cannabis-dhatura are offered to Lord Shiva.

Narali Purnima Rituals

On the day of Narali Purnima, fishermen repair their marine tools so that they do not face any problems while fishing in future. This festival is an opportunity for fishermen to pay respect to their God and profession. Apart from this, fishermen who are financially capable, buy new boats or fishing nets on this day and decorate the boats lavishly.

What to do on Narali Purnima?

  1. Avoid fishing: On this day fishermen do not catch fish in the sea and also do not consume fish.
  2. Float a coconut: People go to the seashore and float coconuts in the sea. This is considered a symbol of peace and prosperity.
  3. Understand the importance of coconut: Coconut is a tree that provides fruit, useful leaves and bark. Coconut is considered a symbol of the third eye of Lord Shiva and is broken before auspicious works.

Narali Purnima is celebrated in different ways in South India. In some places, religious rituals like Yagyopaveet or Upanayana are performed and food and donations are given to Brahmins for the peace of the souls of the ancestors. Thus, Narali Purnima is not just a festival but an important part of Indian cultural and religious life, which holds special significance in the sea-related communities and all over India.
