Navratri is a festival dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her incarnations. It is a festival celebrated twice as a major festival twice in India. Once in March-April, known as Chaitra Navratri and other in October-November, known as Sharad Navratri.

Chaitra Navratri

Chaitra Navaratri or Vasanta Navaratri is an Indian Hindu festival celebrated during the Chaitra month in Hindu calendar which falls in March-April, according to the English calendar. 

It is celebrated mainly in northern and western part of India. In Maharashtra, the festival is called Gudi Padwa and Ugadi in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.

The festival marks the start of Hindu New Year. The festival is celebrated at the start of spring. 

The nine-day long festival ends with Ram Navami, which marks the birth of Lord Rama.

Sharad Navratri

Sharad Navratri or Maha Navratri is celebrated in the lunar month of Ashvin. 

It is celebrated as Durga Puja in eastern India, particularly West Bengal and across the country. The festival marks the start of Winter.

According to a legend, Lord Rama worshipped the nine forms of Goddess Durga before the fight with Ravana. Lord Rama attains the power of the deities to defeat Ravana.

The nine-day long festival ends with Dusshera or Vijayadashmi on the tenth day, which marks Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana.
