In order to solve the myths related to organ donation and to spread awareness about organ donation, world organ donation day is celebrated every year on this day i.e. 13th of August. This day is meant to encourage people to donate their healthy organs to save someone else's life after death. Donating organs such as kidneys, heart, eyes, and lunges can help people struggling with long-term illnesses to save lives.

In the absence of healthy organs, many people's lives are lost, which can also be saved. The purpose of this day is to make people feel willing to donate their organs which changes the lives of many people. The organ of a person declared brain dead can be donated. India has its own organ donation day which is celebrated every year on November 27. On this occasion, the government works to call upon the citizens to voluntarily donate their organs and save the lives of other people.

When did organ donation begin?: Modern medicine has made it possible to transplant organs from one person to another. The first successful organ transplant was performed in the U.S. in 1954. Dr Joseph Murray was also awarded the Nobel Prize in 1990 for successfully performing a kidney transplant between twin brothers Ronald and Richard Herrick in Physiology and Medicine.

Who can be a voluntary organ donor?: Donating your organs is just like giving someone a new life. Regardless of age, religion and caste, any organ can voluntarily become a donor. But it is essential that the donor does not suffer from chronic diseases such as cancer, HIV or heart and lung disease. A healthy donor is of utmost importance and when you are 18 years old, you can register to become a donor.
