Mohammad Hamid Ansari was born on this day, i.e., April 1, 1937, in Calcutta, Bengal, to Mohammad Abdul Aziz Ansari and Asiya Begum. Although his ancestral home is in the city of Ghazipur in the state of Uttar Pradesh, he spent his early years in Kolkata. He is the nephew of Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari, former President of the Indian National Congress and freedom fighter. He is also related to UP local political activists Afzal Ansari, Sibaktullah Ansari, and jailed criminal politician Mukhtar Ansari. Ansari did his schooling at St. Edward's School, Shimla. After graduating from St. Xavier's College, Calcutta, affiliated with the University of Calcutta, he earned a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degree from Aligarh Muslim University. He is married to Salma Ansari; they have two sons and a daughter.

Mohammad Hamid Ansari is an Indian politician and retired Foreign Service officer who was the 12th Chairman of the Rajya Sabha from 2007 to 2017 and the 12th Vice-Chairman of India. Mohd Hamid Ansari joined IFS in 1961. In a diplomatic career spanning 38 years, he served as Indian Ambassador to Australia, Afghanistan, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. He also served as India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations between 1993 and 1995. He was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University from 2000 to 2002. He was the chairman of the National Commission for Minorities from 2006 to 2007.

He was elected Vice President of India on August 10, 2007 and assumed office on August 11, 2007. He was re-appointed on August 7, 2012, and was sworn in by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. The swearing-in ceremony was held on August 11, 2012, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. His second term expired in August 2017, and as he was not given a second term, he decided not to run for a third term in the 2017 vice presidential election.
