Lucknow: The Congress has suffered a major setback ahead of next month's assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Former Union minister RPN Singh has resigned from the Congress, now he can take over the reins of the Bhartiya Janata Party. Singh was considered to be the big face of the Congress in UP after Jitin Prasada. RPN Singh's name was also included in the list of star campaigners of the Congress, which was released on Monday.

The Congress had appointed former Union minister RPN Singh as the star campaigner for the UP polls, but now he will campaign in UP for the 'lotus.' It is believed that the BJP may also make him an assembly candidate. RPN Singh belongs to the Royal Sainthwar family of Kushinagar. He has also been the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs. Congress had appointed him in charge of several states. His father, CPN Singh, was a senior Congress leader. He was also an MP from the Kushinagar Lok Sabha constituency. He was made the Minister of State for Defence in the Indira government in 1980. It is being told that RPN Singh has also met PM Modi and the BJP high command three days ago.

RPN Singh became an MLA from Padrauna for the first time in 1996. He was an MLA from this seat till 2009. He then reached Parliament after winning the Lok Sabha elections from Kushinagar. RPN Singh's full name is Kunwar Ratanjit Pratap Narayan Singh. He is also called the Raja Sahib of Padrauna.  RPN Singh was born on April 25, 1964, in Delhi. He belongs to the Kshatriya family. He married journalist Sonia Singh in 2002 and has three daughters.
